Established in 1997 and originally based at Teddington Memorial Hospital, Teddington Osteopaths moved into its current, newly refurbished premises in October 2002. The clinic provides osteopathic care for patients of all ages, a chiropody and podiatry clinic, dietary clinic specialising in sports nutrition and homeopathic clinic. Practice hours:

Mon 9:00-5:30  Tue 9:00-7:00  Wed 9:00-5:00  Thur 9:00-7:00  Fri 9:00-5:30  Sat 9:00-12:30

The Practitioners
We have three fully qualified and registered osteopaths, two state registered chiropodists and podiatrists, a state registered and accredited sports dietitian, a homeopath and three receptionists at the practice.

What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and treatment for a variety of musculo-skeletal problems, involving the joints, bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues.

Osteopaths consider the patient from a mechanical, functional and postural viewpoint to allow the body to function with the minimum of wear, stress and energy. Mechanical problems occurring within the body, can create imbalances within the normal tension of the spine. This may affect the nervous and circulatory systems and lead to pain, disability and dysfunction.

osteopathOsteopathy may be used to help:

  • Back, neck and shoulder problems
  • Sciatica
  • Whiplash
  • Joint & ligament strains
  • Sports injuries
  • A number of problems encountered during pregnancy and after childbirth
  • Babies that are unsettled, have disturbed sleep patterns, colic symptoms or recurrent ear infections
  • Arthritic pain
  • Headaches
  • Posture checks

How do Osteopaths treat?
Osteopaths employ a wide range of treatment methods according to the individual's age, physique and particular problem. Methods range from soft-tissue 'massage' of muscles and ligaments, passive stretching and traction to joints and manipulative techniques (which patients often feel as a click) to improve joint mobility. Osteopaths are trained to recognise the need for medical investigation and will refer as appropriate.

Is Osteopathy Right For Me?
If you are unsure whether osteopathic treatment would be beneficial for you or your family, one of the osteopaths would be happy to discuss whether a consultation would be appropriate.

Cranial Osteopathy
Cranial osteopathy involves using very gentle techniques which are particularly useful in the treatment of children. It can be helpful if they have had a difficult birth, are unsettled, suffering from colic, disturbed sleep patterns, as well as other problems including recurrent ear infections. The techniques can also be used on adults.

O
CC - Osteopathic Centre for Children
At the OCC we use osteopathy to treat children with a wide range of conditions. Osteopathy can help in many ways, such as reducing the need for medication, lessening the psychological effects of an operation or serious illness, assisting speedier recovery and providing fortification to the body's tissues during radical drug therapy.
Babies

Paediatric Osteopathy has remarkable success in treating premature babies, who inevitably suffer stresses and trauma during birth and from the equipment that needs to be used to stabilise their condition, and are often also suffering from other health complications. The OCC has a team of 'flying' paediatric osteopaths who treat these babies within the intensive care and neonatal unit at Barnet hospital in London.
Mother and Baby

Many childhood ailments can be traced back to traumas and strains received at birth, while a new mother's wellbeing may be similarly compromised for months and even years to come.

The sooner an osteopath is able to diagnose and treat a baby, the easier it is for the balance within that child to be restored. Similarly, a post-natal check of the mother can help her to avoid poor mental and physical health, both in the short term, as she devotes all her time to the new baby, and in the long term, as it can help to prevent and correct the physical traumas which result from childbirth.

vitality centreShe assesses the posture of an individual, the way they walk, the movement of the joints and the function of their systems and nutritional status using diagnostic kinesiology. Her treatments include a combination of deep massage, mobilisation of the joints, manipulation, cranial osteopathy, nutritional, herbal and Kneippe hydrotherapy advice. She uses exercises based on yoga and Pilate's to help stretch and strengthen key postural muscles. All of the above is tailored to the requirements of the individual.

Ratna has written nutritional articles for an Internet Company, appeared on Channel East TV as a Naturopath.

Ratna has specialised in pre and post natal care as well as having had experience working with midwives. This allows for care for mum's from the start of their pregnancy, through out and then ratna works with babies. Some of the sessions can be tailored to teach partner's how they can help treat their wife during pregnancy and assist during labour.

Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of Osteopathic treatment. It is a gentle yet extremely effective approach which, maybe used to treat people of all ages, from birth to old age.

Every cell in a healthy body expresses a rhythmical movement that is fundamental for life. All the structures in the body, from the fluids to the bones and organs, follow their own particular pattern of movement. This is described as the Cranial Rhythm, a very subtle movement of small amplitude. In response to physical knocks or emotional stress the body's tissues contract. Any stresses, traumas or tension can be stored in the body and so reduce optimum function and future development of the body.

This treatment is great to improve general health and well-being as well as for stress, insomnia, headaches, depression, exhaustion, learning difficulties and back pain. Babies and children who are experiencing problems such as crying, colic, sleeping and feeding difficulties can be helped. It is a deeply relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Ratna Vohora and Jane Naylor-Maury are both qualified and registered osteopaths and cranial osteopaths. They have both worked with many babies and pregnant ladies.
